Acupuncture May Be Another Modality To Treat PTSD In People And Pets

Acupuncture may help people with post traumatic stress disorder according to a recent clinical trial. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. Traumatic events that may trigger PTSD include violent personal assaults, natural or human-caused disasters, accidents, or military combat.

Animals and people both suffer from PTSD. Many dogs  who have been badly abused or abandoned suffer from PTSD . Several of the  Vick  Pitbulls have been studied and diagnosed with a form of PTSD.

There are several points that can be used to help alleviate the symptoms. Each Meridian houses an emotion  a few examples are:

Lung houses grief

Kidney houses fear

Liver houses anger

Stomach houses worry and anxiety

Pericardium  deals with trust

By stimulating the points on these meridians either through needling or touch it allows the body to find balance and well being; while releasing what is no longer needed.

For humans, dogs have proven to be very effective in helping with the effects of PTSD. There are several programs around the country that are partnering Canines and Veterans with great results. Acupuncture or  Acupressure might be a great addition to these programs for additional benefits for both the Veterans and the dogs.
